You do not need a boat full of gear to start fishing. A few well-chosen items will carry you through your first trips. Use this checklist and add more as you learn what you enjoy.

Licenses and rules

Buy the fishing license your state requires and check regulations for the water you will fish, including size limits, bag limits and bait rules. Many state wildlife agencies list free fishing days.

The outfit

A rod and reel matched to your target fish and filled with fresh line. See our combo guide, reel guide and line guide.

Basic tackle

Hooks in a few sizes, split shot weights, bobbers, a few common lures or bait suited to your area, and swivels. Ask a local tackle shop what is working.

Tools

Line clippers or nail clippers, needle-nose pliers or hook removers, a small knife and a towel or rag. A net or lip gripper helps with landing and releasing fish.

Storage

A small tackle box or bag keeps hooks and lures organized and prevents tangles.

Comfort and safety

Sunscreen, polarized sunglasses, a hat, water, snacks, insect repellent and a first aid kit. Wear a life jacket on boats and near deep or moving water.

Care and conservation

Handle fish with wet hands, release quickly and pack out all trash and old line.
